Eastbourne Chiropractic for Pregnancy
I have written this mini case study about ‘Mummy Rachel’, a pregnant lady, who came in to see me at the chiropractic clinic in Eastbourne with low back pain and general aches and pains. Rachel is a fictitious character based on several pregnant ladies who have visited me at our chiropractor clinic in Eastbourne.
It is common to experience some pain and discomfort during pregnancy. Up to 50% of pregnant ladies will experience low back pain at some point with others experiencing other kinds of discomfort such as neck pain, headaches and general aches and pains.
Your body continuously adapts to pregnancy by going through monumental changes both physically and physiologically. With these changes, there may be some irritation to the musculoskeletal system (muscles, bones and ligaments) which leads to these types of symptoms.
I’m seeing increasingly more Eastbourne mums-to-be seek chiropractic treatment for their aches and pains during this challenging stage of life. Not only do mothers need a drug free alterative to help them with their pain, but I believe people are increasingly choosing chiropractic because of the common sense approach to helping the body cope with the additional stresses and strains, rather than just trying to mask the symptoms.
Throughout this case study, I will outline the process for pregnant ladies who come to see me at our Chiropractors in Eastbourne. Along the way, I will highlight some information which you may be useful to you wherever you are.
Rachel is pregnant with her first child and has told me she is experiencing low back pain and some general aches and pains. Rachel is worried because her pregnancy is going very well apart from the discomfort she is experiencing. As previously mentioned, many pregnant ladies experience discomfort at some time during their pregnancy and it is normal to do so due to the changes to your body.
Firstly, I spent some time talking to Rachel to fully understand her problem and to make sure I had all the information I needed. Once I felt I had done so, I performed a physical examination on Rachel. For most parts of the examination, I use a special pillow which is comfortable for ladies who are pregnant and safe to use on the benches within the chiropractic clinic. At our chiropractic clinic we have three chiropractic treatment rooms, each with a different type of chiropractic bench. However, because our clinic is so family focused all of our benches are suitable for pregnant mums.
The examination began with vital signs which includes a blood pressure check. Following on from this, I performed a neurological examination, an orthopaedic examination and then checked Rachel’s spine, specific muscles and joints.
The tests that are performed during your first chiropractic visit are important because they help to identify where the primary cause of the problem lies. I can then formulate a diagnosis and treatment plan for you. I will go through each stage of the treatment process and discuss the initial course of treatment which I feel would be most appropriate for your condition.
Be prepared to spend about 45min to an hour for this first visit. I prefer to take the time if needed to identify exactly what the problem is, and the best type of treatment.
Chiropractic treatment for pregnant mothers is very gentle, completely safe and will not harm your or your baby. I use many techniques for pregnancy but some of the specific techniques I use within the chiropractic clinic are Sacro Occipital Techique (SOT) and cranial chiropractic. I also use soft tissue work to ease muscular tension.
Within a couple of appointments with Rachel, she started to notice relief from her low back pain. It’s quite typical that people notice relief over the first few chiropractic treatments. She also noticed that she was experiencing less general aches and pains. In addition, because of the lifestyle advice I gave her, Rachel felt a lot more comfortable at night and was sleeping better.
It is important to have regular chiropractic check-ups to monitor how you are responding to care and to prevent any relapses in your musculoskeletal symptoms. I also recommend a chiropractic review after delivery as your body re-adapts to its pre-pregnancy state. Up to 70% of women experience aches and pains following the birthing process so it can be particularly useful have a check-up at after birth.
As well as these low back pain and general aches and pains that Rachel had, I see a number of other musculoskeletal health conditions (muscle and joint) in pregnant ladies. You’ll find that at our Eastbourne based clinic the treatment is tailored to you and your needs. Sometimes I’ll work with a multi-disciplinary team within the clinic to co-manage a pregnant lady who’s suffering. Sometimes it can work well to combine chiropractic treatment with specialist pregnancy massage or even acupuncture.
When I joined the team at Lushington Chiropractic I was delighted and honoured by how quickly my paediatric and pregnancy patient practice grew. There seems to be a huge demand in Eastbourne for this type of personally tailored, gentle and drug free solution to pain during pregnancy. I’d also like to acknowledge all the kind words and recommendations my Mums and Midwives have given me, which has certainly helped to spread the word throughout Eastbourne about pregnancy and paediatric chiropractic care at Lushington Chiropractic Clinic.
