New Patients

AV-lush-Chiro-38

I fully understand that seeing a chiropractor for the first time might be worrying for some people, so I’ve explained what new patients can expect.

It is important to me that every guest is seen and treated as an individual. I will tailor all questions, examinations and treatments to you.

Your first visit will have two parts, firstly reviewing your health and medical history and secondly an examination. The consultation is a time for me to assess whether your problem is a chiropractic case or if you need further imaging such as x-ray or MRI. If I can’t help you, then I will find someone who can. Whether that is a referral to another appropriate health care professional.

I will take the time to listen and understand your problem during the history. I will explore all areas of your health to help find the root cause of your problem. Once a comprehensive history has been taken we move onto the physical examination. This is where we assess your nerves, muscles, joints and general movement through careful observations, palpation and orthopaedic tests. When carrying out specific tests I will clearly explain what we are doing and why we are doing them. Gowns will be provided for this part of the consultation.

I think it can also be important to understand how a problem has affected your quality of life so that I can best tailor your treatment to help with that.

I look forward to seeing you and helping you on your journey to better health.

I just wanted to leave a review to say how impressed I was with the service and treatment. I've used chiropractors for years and found that some are better than others. It's hard to know who to choose but I was recommended personally and since talking to some friends it seems I'm one of the last to find this fabulous chiropractor! She's a gem. I found her more attentive and genuine than (some) other chiropractors I've seen in the past. But most of all, the treatment was excellent. She did some muscle work to my jaw and neck, which immediately helped my headache. The treatment itself was painful, but she was calm about everything and you felt safe. She explained everything before (and during) the treatment and I was quite happy. Obviously it's all private healthcare but for someone as good as this well worth the money. Tried and tested, highly recommended.

What to Expect

Upon being warmly welcomed by the reception team at Lushington Chiropractic, you will be given an assessment form so we can gather some essential information about you. For baby and child consultations, you will be given a special form to fill out.

You will then be greeted by myself, and I will take you through to the treatment room where we will begin the consultation.

Questions

My guests are often surprised at how much detail I go into during the first assessment. My approach is to get to the root of the problem and to find out what is going on from the start. This is so I can make an accurate diagnosis and formulate an appropriate management plan that is tailored to you and your needs.

During the consultation I will ask you lots of questions about the area you are concerned with to ensure I have all the right information to formulate my diagnosis. I will work out what is causing your problem and see if there are any compensations as a result.

I believe taking the time to listen carefully allows me to understand a lot more about you and your preferences. It also allows me to ensure that the management plan I create is tailored for you which helps to achieve faster and more effective relief.

As well as getting to know a lot more about you and why you have come to the chiropractic clinic, I will also be interested in any other injuries or accidents, your general health and medical history too.

Part of the assessment is to work out if this is the type of problem I can help you with.

Chiropractic Examination

After the initial chat, I will carry out a very thorough physical examination on the area of complaint. These examinations are very comprehensive and are specifically tailored for each person based on their needs. The examination will consist of orthopaedic and neurological tests to help me to rule in or rule out a certain diagnosis. The examination may also include the following:

  • Posture observation
  • Palpation
  • Muscle function with range of motion
  • Muscle strength
  • Skin sensation
  • Reflexes
  • Spinal examination
  • Blood pressure check
  • X-rays if required

Using this thorough approach to the assessment, I am able to make an accurate diagnosis and get to the root of the problem. At this point, I will be able to advise you about whether this is a chiropractic problem or whether referral for an X-ray or to another health care professional will be more appropriate for you.

You will need to undress for the examination part of the assessment but no more than you are happy. I have gowns that you may wear and you will be able to undress privately in the room. Your privacy and comfort within the clinic is most important to me.

Chiropractic Consultation for Babies

Paediatric care is personally tailored to your child and takes all aspects of their health and well-being into consideration.

Once we are in the treatment room, I will ask you some further questions about your child to gain as much information and understanding as necessary to provide an accurate diagnosis for your baby.

I will then spend a few moments with your child to ensure they are comfortable before performing the examination which will identify any problems. I will do my best to ensure that your baby feels at ease during the consultation.

A Paediatric Examination Includes:

  • Vital signs
  • Orthopaedic examination
  • Neurological examination
  • Joint movement
  • Muscle palpation
  • Spinal examination
  • General range of movement
  • Pelvic and hip movement

I will explain the examination process and talk you through your child’s treatment plan. Treatment consists of gentle techniques which are specially designed for paediatric care.

Your Personal Health Report

On your second visit, I will go through a full report of findings with you, this involves an explanation of the following:

  • What is wrong
  • If I can help
  • What type of treatment you need
  • How soon you will feel better

If you are happy with what has been discussed then we will start your chiropractic care immediately.

Most care plans involve a schedule of visits which are tailored to suit you personally. The focus is to get to the root of the problem and to provide a personally tailored care package that meets your goals.

Bumps & Babies

My special area of interest as a chiropractor in Eastbourne is working with pregnant mothers, babies and children of all ages.

I’ve been passionate about this area of special interest since I was still studying my Masters Degree in Chiropractic Sciences. One of the reasons I chose to work at Lushington Chiropractic, and to be a chiropractor in Eastbourne was because of the excellent reputation the clinic has and support for this type of family focused chiropractic care.

Pregnancy & Chiropractic

As part of my chiropractic practice I offer chiropractic care to help you before, during and after pregnancy.

The excitement of preparing for a new baby can often be lessened for mums-to-be when they are faced with persistent back pain. During pregnancy, your body goes through many changes and it is important to understand as much as possible about why you may be experiencing back pain. The lack of accessible pain relief can add extra stress and frustration leading to tension.

How Common is Back Pain During Pregnancy?

It has been reported that approximately 50% of mums-to-be experience back pain during pregnancy with 50-70% experiencing back pain during labour and after childbirth.

What is Causing my Back Pain?

There is no single cause for experiencing back pain during pregnancy, it may be related to dramatic hormonal and structural changes your body goes through. These changes are included in the normal progression of pregnancy and can often be the reason for pain and discomfort.

Hormones released during pregnancy can soften and relax the ligaments and joints, especially around the pelvis, which can make them more prone to pain.

Postural changes happen to allow for the growing baby which can put pressure on the surrounding structures of the rib cage, lower back and pelvis.

What Symptoms do you Treat that are Related to Pregnancy?

Many mums-to-be visit me at Lushington Chiropractic clinic with symptoms such as:

  • Low back pain
  • Pain around the ribcage
  • Neck pain
  • Pelvic and pubic joint pain
  • Leg and hip pain
  • Migraine headaches

Also, many new mothers after the birthing process find that they soon experience back and neck pain. This can relate to posture when breastfeeding or when carrying their little one.

How can Chiropractic Care Help?

There are many chiropractic techniques which are suitable for the pregnant woman. These techniques aim to restore comfort and provide pain relief as well as spinal stability. In addition, chiropractic care uses soft tissue relaxation and can provide advice to support you accommodating the changes to your body.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe?

Chiropractic care is very gentle for pregnant women and the techniques used are very specific. We will never do anything that you are uncomfortable with or may harm the baby. Our aim is to provide the highest level of care to ensure you are comfortable and safe.

There are many ways to help, that is why I love chiropractic. If you have any questions or concerns, contact me to arrange a chat.

Chiropractic Treatment for Babies

Chiropractic care for babies is very safe and effective. For the new-born, there are times during pregnancy and the birth which can put extra stress and may lead to problems in their delicate neuro-musculoskeletal (nerves, joints and muscles) system.

A chiropractic check-up can be recommended if your baby has experienced intrauterine constraint, breech position, back to back delivery, birth trauma or an assisted delivery (such as caesarean, forceps or vontouse).

Sometimes, these additional stresses can result in musculoskeletal problems for your baby.

I see a lot of babies at our Eastbourne based chiropractor clinic. We’re very accessible and family friendly. The doors are wider than normal to help wheelchairs and buggies, and our rooms are all on the ground floor, which helps too.

Most of all, you’ll find my chiropractic colleagues and reception team are understanding and supportive. We want you and your family to benefit from chiropractic care in a comfortable and caring enviroment.

Do you recognise one or more of the following symptoms in your baby?

  • A dislike to lying on their back
  • Bringing their legs up or arching their back whilst lying
  • A preference to looking in one direction only
  • Irritability that is very difficult to console
  • Inability to relax
  • Problems latching on to feed
  • A dislike to trying tummy time

If so, then chiropractic care could be right for your baby.

Chiropractic care for young babies is focused on helping to release musculoskeletal stresses put on your baby’s delicate system during pregnancy and birth. It is important to note that chiropractic care is not for medical conditions and should be seen as an addition to your normal health visitor and/or midwife check-ups.

How does the Treatment Differ from an Adult?

Chiropractic treatment for babies and young children is very different from that of an adult although similar principles are maintained.

Paediatric care is personally tailored to your child and involves gentle safe and effective techniques. These include spinal and cranial techniques and I will explain the treatment process to you and talk you through your child’s treatment plan.

I see lots of people of all ages and stages of life at our clinic in Eastbourne. Some adults specifically choose to see me because they like the very gentle paediatric chiropractic techniques I use on children, babies and pregnant mothers.

Whatever your needs, you can rest assured that I’ll want to help and to personally tailor your treatment to you.

Eastbourne Chiropractor FAQs

How much treatment will I need?

The amount of treatment recommended in your treatment plan is individually tailored to your condition and will differ from person to person. The length of time of your treatments will depend on how long you have had your condition, how severe your condition is, whether or not you have had your condition before and how old you are, as well as many other factors.

On completion of the history and thorough examination, I will be able to advise you on how much treatment you will need and how long I expect you to start feeling changes.

It is best to address your complaint by seeking help as soon as possible and for you to follow my recommendations in order to get the most out of your care.

How much will my treatment cost?

New patient consultations are £49 with adult treatments £35 and child treatments (under 18 years of age) £29.

Baby patient (under 6 months of age) consultations are £29 and baby treatments (under 6 months of age) are £20

Is Chiropractic treatment safe?

Chiropractic is widely recognised as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuro-musculoskeletal (nerves, muscles and joints) conditions.

Although Chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health therapy is completely free of potential adverse effects. The risks are, however, very small. Most patients feel relief immediately after receiving chiropractic treatment but some people may experience some mild soreness, stiffness or aching, just like after a sports massage. Current research indicates that mild soreness or discomfort following spinal manipulation typically fades within 24 hours.

If you have any other questions or concerns about the treatment, please feel free to share them with me as there are many different chiropractic techniques that I am able to use.

Does Chiropractic treatment hurt?

No, there is usually minimal, if any, discomfort involved with the adjustment of a joint. I will always talk you through every procedure before and will do my best to make sure that treatment is as comfortable as possible.

What is the ‘popping’ sound when I get adjusted?

Adjustments of a joint may give off an ‘audible release’ which is the popping or clicking sound you hear, similar to that when you crack your fingers. This is just gas being released from the joint due to a change of pressure within the joint.

Do you as a Chiropractor get regular Chiropractic treatment?

Most definitely! Our team of chiropractors understand the power of Chiropractic and the importance of our health. We take every opportunity to have regular check-ups and treatment.

I fully understand that seeing a chiropractor for the first time might be worrying for some people, so I’ve explained what new patients can expect.
