New Patients

AV-lush-Chiro-38

I fully understand that seeing a chiropractor for the first time might be worrying for some people, so I’ve explained what new patients can expect.

It is important to me that every guest is seen and treated as an individual. I will tailor all questions, examinations and treatments to you.

Your first visit will have two parts, firstly reviewing your health and medical history and secondly an examination. The consultation is a time for me to assess whether your problem is a chiropractic case or if you need further imaging such as x-ray or MRI. If I can’t help you, then I will find someone who can. Whether that is a referral to another appropriate health care professional.

I will take the time to listen and understand your problem during the history. I will explore all areas of your health to help find the root cause of your problem. Once a comprehensive history has been taken we move onto the physical examination. This is where we assess your nerves, muscles, joints and general movement through careful observations, palpation and orthopaedic tests. When carrying out specific tests I will clearly explain what we are doing and why we are doing them. Gowns will be provided for this part of the consultation.

I think it can also be important to understand how a problem has affected your quality of life so that I can best tailor your treatment to help with that.

I look forward to seeing you and helping you on your journey to better health.

Questions

My guests can be surprised by how much detail I go into on my assessments. I like to find the root of the problem and know exactly what’s going on right from the start. This helps me gain an accurate diagnosis and to develop the appropriate treatment plan treatment plan.

During the consultation I will ask you lots of questions about your back, neck, shoulder, headaches or whatever it is you have come in with. I will work out what the cause of the problem is, how it’s affected your body and what other compensations it may have caused.

I like to find out everything I can about your presenting complaint to help me develop your personalised treatment plan to get the results you want. I believe that taking the time to actually listen at the start saves much more time later on and helps to get faster more effective relief.

As well as getting to know you and finding out about your current problem I will be interested in any previous history of injuries, your general health and medical history too. Part of my aim with your assessment is to work out if it is the kind of problem I can help with.

Examination

After the initial history taking, I will carry a comprehensive physical examination on the area in question. Examinations are very thorough and specifically tailored for your problem. Orthopaedic and neurological tests will be carried out to help rule in or rule a particular diagnosis. This can include:

  • Muscle strength
  • Skin senses
  • Reflexes
  • Muscle palpation and range of motion assessment
  • Spinal examination
  • Range of movement
  • X-Rays, blood pressure and other vital signs if required

Using this thorough approach, I am able to find the root of the problem. At this point I will be able to tell you whether this is a chiropractic problem or if you further imaging such as an x-ray or referral to another health care practitioner.

You will need to undress, but no more than you are happy. I have gowns available and will leave the room whilst you change. Your privacy and comfort is very important to me.

Baby Consultation

Chiropractic care for children and babies is very safe and effective. I have a passion for treating babies and children; because of this I offer a special rate for their Chiropractic consultation and treatment.

Paediatric care is very much personally tailored to your child. If you have any questions, please call Lushington Chiropractic where I am based and ask to speak to me directly.

A paediatric chiropractic examination includes:

  • Vital signs
  • Orthopaedic examination
  • Joint movement
  • Muscle palpation
  • Spinal examination
  • General range of movement
  • Each individual spinal bone movement
  • Pelvic bone movement

Treatment consists of gentle spinal paediatric techniques. I’ll explain the treatment process to you and talk through your child’s chiropractic treatment plan.

Your Personal Health Report

On your second visit I will go through a full report of findings with you, explaining:

  • What is wrong
  • If I can help
  • What type of treatment you need (chiropractic, massage or something else)
  • How soon you will feel better

If you are happy with what has been discussed then we will start your chiropractic care immediately.

Most care plans involve a schedule of visits, tailored to suit you personally. The focus is to get to the root of the problem and provide a personally tailored care package that meets your goals.

If you want to simply feel better as soon as possible then that will be my focus. If you want to get to the root of the problem and use chiropractic to help you move and work at your best, then I can focus on that.

The World Federation of Chiropractic website defines Chiropractic “A health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal adjustment and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation.”

The World Health Organisation offers a slightly different definition: “A health care profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on general health. There is an emphasis on manual techniques, including joint adjustment and/or manipulation with a particular focus on subluxations.”

The definition of Chiropractic has been argued about for many years. For me the most important points within these definitions are highlighted. I take the time to complete a thorough history and examination to ensure an accurate diagnosis is met, and then the appropriate treatment can be chosen. It is because I aim to get to the root of the problem, that the treatment will help to prevent further disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system. Treatment can consist of Chiropractic adjustments, as well as soft tissue techniques such as massage and rehabilitative exercises. Although each treatment will be individually tailored to the person. Your general health and wellbeing will always be in my best interest.

How much treatment do I need? How quickly will I feel results?

The amount of treatment is different for each individual and their condition. The length of time treatment is needed depends on how long you have had the condition, how severe it is, whether you have suffered with it previously and how old you are, to name a few points.

After taking a thorough history and completing an examination, I will have a better idea of how long I expect for you to feel better. I will then always do my best to tell you how much treatment you will need.

I would always advise to address your complaint as soon as possible and for you to follow my recommendations in order to get the most out of your care.

Is Chiropractic treatment safe?

Chiropractic is widely recognised as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal conditions.

Although, Chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects, however the risks associated with chiropractic are small. Many patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, but some may experience mild soreness, stiffness or aching, just as they do after a sports massage. Current research shows that minor discomfort or soreness following spinal manipulation typically fades within 24 hours.

Please share any concerns or fears with me, as there is a range of techniques that I am able to use to accommodate every situation.

Why is there a popping sound when I get adjusted?

Adjustment of a joint may result in the release of a gas bubble between the joints, which makes a popping sound. The same thing occurs when you ‘crack’ your knuckles. The noise is caused by a change of pressure within the joint, which results in gas bubbles being released.

Will treatment hurt?

No, there is usually minimal, if any discomfort involved in adjusting a joint. I will always talk you through every procedure before and will do my best to make your treatment as comfortable and effective as I can.

Do the Chiropractors and Staff get regular Chiropractic Care?
